WHAT SUGAR AND SPICE
ARE MADE OF
There is an undeniable authenticity, truthfulness and plain fun to Sugar and Spice’s music. The songs of this award winning Alberta country music duo are infused with humour, heartache and a sense of female experiences that comes from growing up in small towns in Alberta as wives, mothers and knowing how to have fun – an aspect of their lives that is deeply connected to their talent as musicians, singers and songwriters.
Sugar and Spice are comprised of Shelly Dubois and Danita Lynn – both growing up in rural communities of Northern Alberta. Shelly from Peace River, Alberta and Danita from Plamondon, Alberta. Even though both now reside in Edmonton, Alberta, these ladies have deep roots in the Plamondon area as both of their great grandparents travelled from Michigan, USA and settled in Plamondon. These ladies have lots of common relatives but they are not directly related – but they are “Soul Sisters”. Both of these ladies were exposed to music at a young age through family members and many relatives who played music. They came to appreciate the country music vein – Shelly started playing the guitar at the age of ten and in her first band at thirteen. Danita loved to sing in the family band as a young adult and also found her passion in songwriting. Their paths did not cross until the summer of 2013 at a festival in Plamondon that Danita’s Mom had started years prior. Their friendship was instant and they immediately started writing together and later forming their duo, Sugar and Spice in 2017.
In 2019, they released their first originally penned single, Lonesome Town and have been releasing songs every year since. Evidence that this country duo is on the rise, is their most recent award on an international level with the Josie Music Awards out of Nashville, TN. This award show supports and promotes Independent Artists on a global scale. Five years in a row, this dynamic duo has received nominations and won their first award in 2023 for Country Duo Song of the Year for their song, A Different Kind of Rush. They accepted the award in the famous circle on the Grand Ole Opry stage. This year, 2024, they are once again nominated in four categories: Country Duo/Group of the Year, Country Duo Song of the Year, Songwriter Achievement and Fan’s Choice.
Years of experience as individual artists makes them no stranger to the stage so performing together as a duo comes easy. They have been performing as a duo at a variety of venues and have also performed with a band for larger shows. They perform many cover songs from older and newer country, nineteen ninety country artists and a sprinkle of classic rock from artists such as Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Lorrie Morgan, Terri Clark, Johnny Cash, Miranda Lambert, CCR, The Beatles and The Eagles. Their original songs are also part of their repertoire which are always welcomed by the audiences they perform for.
Sugar and Spice’s harmonies are well blended just as their humour and presence is on stage when entertaining. Audiences always compliment these fun and talented ladies on both their singing abilities and their interaction with the audience. It’s always a fun, dancing and sing along party. No one leaves a show disappointed and fans have definitely attested to that on the duo’s social media and by submitting their nominations for Fan’s Choice award.
